Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) overview

The HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to perform CPR in a range of situations. This course is essential for anyone who may be required to provide CPR in their workplace or community. It is also a key component of the broader Provide First Aid course, making it an ideal step for those seeking comprehensive emergency response skills.

What does it cover?

  1. Introduction to CPR
    • Understanding the importance of CPR
    • Legal and ethical considerations
    • Basic anatomy and physiology related to CPR
  2. Assessing the Situation
    • Recognizing the signs and symptoms of cardiac arrest
    • Ensuring the safety of the rescuer and others
    • Determining the need for CPR
  3. Performing CPR
    • DRSABCD Action Plan (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation)
    • Performing chest compressions on adults, children, and infants
    • Providing rescue breaths
    • Utilizing barrier devices during CPR
  4. Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
    • Understanding the purpose and function of an AED
    • Applying AED pads correctly
    • Following AED prompts and instructions
  5. Post-CPR Procedures
    • Handover to medical professionals
    • Recording and reporting the incident
    • Debriefing and support for the rescuer

This unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

This course consists of a comprehensive 4-hour face-to-face training session, including breaks and assessments, along with approximately 6 hours of self-paced pre-learning to be completed in advance.

This training is nationally recognised and forms part of our approved scope of registration (RTO 21647). This course includes the following units of competency:

No prerequisites are required for this course

Participants should possess basic language, literacy, and numeracy skills to ensure they can comprehend training materials and instructions effectively.

  • Practical demonstration of CPR techniques
  • Use of an AED
  • Written test covering theoretical knowledge

On successful completion, a Statement of Attainment containing the following units of competency will be awarded to students who have been deemed competent in the training & assessment.

  • Long pants and work boots suitable for practical activities
  • Laptop or tablet is recommended for digital assessments (mobile phones may be used too)
  • Photo Identification
