Provide First Aid overview

The HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. This unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

What does it cover?

Introduction to First Aid:
    • Understanding the principles of first aid
    • Legal and ethical considerations
    • The DRSABCD action plan (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation)
Assessing an Emergency Situation:
    • Conducting a scene survey
    • Primary and secondary survey of the casualty
    • Communication and casualty care
Providing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR):
    • Adult, child, and infant CPR techniques
    • Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
    • Recovery position for unresponsive breathing casualties
First Aid for Medical Conditions:
    • Asthma
    • Anaphylaxis
    • Diabetes
    • Seizures (including epilepsy)
First Aid for Injuries:
    • Wounds and bleeding
    • Burns
    • Fractures and dislocations
    • Sprains and strains
First Aid for Environmental Conditions:
    • Hypothermia and hyperthermia
    • Bites and stings
    • Poisoning
Managing a Casualty:
    • Shock
    • Heart attack
    • Stroke
Practical Scenarios:
    • Role-playing various emergency scenarios
    • Applying first aid in simulated environments
  • Respond to an emergency situation
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures
  • Communicate details of the incident
  • Review the incident

The course is ideal for anyone who needs essential first aid skills for various emergency situations.

This course consists of a comprehensive 1-day (8 hours) face-to-face training session, including breaks and assessments, along with approximately 8 hours of self-paced pre-learning to be completed in advance.

This training is nationally recognised and forms part of our approved scope of registration (RTO 21647). This course includes the following units of competency:

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, participants should have the physical ability to perform CPR on the floor.

Participants should possess basic language, literacy, and numeracy skills to ensure they can comprehend training materials and instructions effectively.

Theory Assessment: Multiple choice and short answer questions covering knowledge components.

Practical Assessment: Demonstration of skills in simulated first aid scenarios, including CPR and use of an AED.

On successful completion, a Statement of Attainment containing the following units of competency will be awarded to students who have been deemed competent in the training & assessment.

  • Long pants and work boots suitable for practical activities
  • Laptop or tablet is recommended for digital assessments (mobile phones may be used too)
  • Photo Identification
